SoftBank Takes Charge in $500 Billion Stargate AI Initiative

Published January 22, 2025

The Trump Administration has officially introduced a significant AI infrastructure project called "Stargate." This venture brings together OpenAI, SoftBank Group, Oracle Corp, and Abu Dhabi's MGX. Initially, the project will launch with an investment of $100 billion, with the total funding potentially reaching up to $500 billion over the next four years.

Prominent figures like Masayoshi Son from SoftBank, Sam Altman from OpenAI, and Larry Ellison from Oracle participated in a press conference held at the White House to announce the initiative.

Ellison shared that the first ten data centers for the joint venture will be established in Abilene, Texas, with intentions to expand to a total of twenty locations.

Analyst Paul Golding from Macquarie highlighted that Son and former President Donald Trump previously announced plans for SoftBank's investment of $100 billion in the U.S. over a four-year period. This investment is expected to create approximately 100,000 jobs focusing on AI and related technologies.

The official statement from OpenAI indicates that SoftBank will be financially responsible for the venture, while OpenAI will oversee operations. Son has been appointed as the Chairman of this initiative. Initial technological partners include Arm Holdings Plc, Microsoft Corp, Nvidia Corp, along with OpenAI and Oracle.

Golding has been monitoring the development of a major project at SoftBank focused on AI, semiconductors, and data centers for quite some time. His earlier reports suggested that the investment targeted approximately $100 billion, aiming to cover a wide range of areas such as data centers, colocated power generation, vaccines, and artificial general intelligence (AGI).

It has been revealed that Son plans to utilize the Arm AI chip division to supply the newly established SoftBank data centers, expected to be operational by 2026. Additionally, there are plans to explore fusion technology as a power source for these facilities.

Meanwhile, Arm's intellectual property is being integrated within the joint effort between Nvidia and SoftBank, focusing on developing multi-access edge computing technology for AI applications over 5G networks in Japan, which can then be adapted for international use.

Golding believes this technology could eventually play a crucial role in the Stargate project, unlocking various Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities, edge inference, and enhancing AI processes.

As the Stargate initiative progresses, observer interest will likely fixate on SoftBank's funding abilities and operational capacity. Participating in such a large-scale project alongside esteemed AI players like OpenAI illustrates the perceived value of SoftBank's assets, especially considering the current technological landscape.
