Mark Zuckerberg Announces Meta's Llama 4 with Enhanced Capabilities
Meta Platforms Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled plans for Llama 4, the next-generation open-source AI model from Meta, during a recent earnings call. This announcement comes amid a competitive tech landscape where companies are developing advanced AI agents capable of executing complicated tasks.
What’s New: Zuckerberg described Llama 4 as being natively multimodal, meaning it can process and integrate various types of data. He noted that Llama 4 will have "agentic capabilities," which will open the door to a wide range of new applications. This comes as the AI industry is moving towards more autonomous systems, following OpenAI's introduction of its “Operator” AI agent.
Furthermore, Zuckerberg expressed optimism that by 2025, Llama and other open-source approaches could emerge as some of the most advanced and widely adopted AI models in the world. He mentioned that the pre-training phase for Llama 4 mini has already been completed, and that progress is being made on both the reasoning models and the larger versions of Llama 4.
Meta is also making substantial investments in infrastructure to support these AI advancements, including plans for a new 2-gigawatt AI data center. This facility is expected to be quite significant, covering a major portion of Manhattan, demonstrating Meta’s commitment to enhancing its AI capabilities.
Importance of This Development: The ongoing AI initiatives are gaining traction, with Meta AI currently having 700 million monthly active users. In the fourth quarter, Meta reported a 21% increase in revenue year-over-year, reaching $48.4 billion, which indicates strong financial support for its AI projects.
Zuckerberg emphasized the strategic necessity of maintaining an American-led standard in open-source AI, especially in the face of competition from Chinese tech firms like DeepSeek. More details on the Llama 4 strategy are anticipated in the near future.
Stock Performance: Following these announcements, Meta Platforms shares rose by 2.29%, trading at $692 in after-hours markets.
