FPIs Remain Net Sellers, Offloading Stocks Worth Rs 2,575 Crore

Published January 7, 2025

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) continued their trend as net sellers in the Indian stock market, offloading stocks valued at approximately Rs 2,575.1 crore, as indicated by provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.

Domestic Institutional Investors Remain Active Buyers

In contrast to the FPIs' selling activity, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) have remained active buyers. They marked their presence by purchasing stocks for 14 consecutive sessions, bringing their total acquisitions to Rs 5,749.7 crore. This suggests a solid interest from local institutional players amid the ongoing market fluctuations.

January Sales and Year-End Overview

According to the National Securities Depository Ltd., FPIs have collectively sold shares worth Rs 7,160 crore in January alone. Looking at the broader picture, FPIs were net sellers throughout 2024, unloading stocks worth Rs 7,078.3 crore. On the flip side, DIIs demonstrated positive sentiment by purchasing stocks worth Rs 8,282.8 crore during the same timeframe.

Volatility in the Market

The Indian stock market experienced a notable decline during recent trading sessions. The benchmark indices faced their sharpest drop since October 3, 2024, with the NSE Nifty 50 closing 388.70 points or 1.62% lower, settling at 23,616.05. Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex fell by 1,258.12 points or 1.59%, reaching 77,964.99.

Market Outlook and Currency Trends

During the recent trading session, the Nifty index saw a steep decline of up to 1.89%, and the Sensex dropped by 1.82%. This volatility emphasizes the challenging environment for equity markets. Additionally, the Indian rupee closed weaker against the US dollar, indicating further pressures on the currency.
