Japanese Banks Remain Supportive of Adani Amid Bribery Allegations

Published November 29, 2024

Japan's largest banks are showing support for billionaire Gautam Adani despite recent bribery charges made in the U.S. that involve a $250 million scheme allegedly aimed at influencing Indian government officials to secure solar energy contracts.

According to sources familiar with the situation, Mizuho Financial Group believes that the controversy surrounding Adani will not have a long-lasting negative impact on their relationship with his conglomerate. They intend to continue their support. Similarly, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group have expressed no intention of severing ties and remain open to providing additional financing if required in the future.

Representatives from these Tokyo-based banks have chosen not to provide further comments on the matter. An official representative of the Adani Group did not respond immediately to requests for comment.
