Xbox Console Sales Decline Amidst Revenue Growth

Published November 1, 2024

Microsoft has released its Q1 Fiscal Year 2025 results, revealing notable changes in the performance of the Xbox brand. The gaming division achieved total earnings of $5.621 billion, with the bulk of this revenue coming from content and services, which accounted for approximately 91%. This increase was primarily influenced by the inclusion of earnings from Activision Blizzard King, which were not part of the previous year's Q1 results.

In stark contrast, Xbox hardware sales experienced a decline. The hardware generated $532 million during the quarter, which is a significant year-over-year decrease of 31% from $758 million. This figure represents only 9% of the total earnings for Microsoft’s gaming division. However, there is a silver lining, as there was a quarter-over-quarter increase of 54%, from $345 million in Q4 of FY 2024.

Looking ahead to Q2 of Fiscal Year 2025, which runs from October to December 2024, there are expectations for growth in both hardware and content & services revenues. This forecast is based on the anticipated release of new first-party games and fresh console variants that could stimulate sales.

Despite the recent uptick in hardware revenue compared to the last quarter, the ongoing decline in console sales raises questions. Analysts suggest that Microsoft might be cutting back on console production to mitigate losses from hardware sales, as these consoles are typically sold at a loss. Microsoft's main profits come from games, services, subscriptions, and microtransactions rather than from the sale of consoles.

At the same time, Microsoft appears to be refocusing its strategy by lowering its reliance on hardware revenue and instead emphasizing more lucrative avenues like Xbox Game Pass and first-party game sales. The company has also mentioned that the next generation of Xbox hardware will introduce the "largest technical leap" in console history, indicating a shift toward more advanced technology in future offerings.
