Bitcoin Surges to Two-Week Highs Amid U.S. Crypto Policy Speculation

Published March 20, 2025

On March 20, Bitcoin (BTC) rose to its highest level in two weeks, trading close to $87,500 on exchanges like Bitstamp. This increase was sparked by rumors that the U.S. government is preparing a significant update to its cryptocurrency policy.

Impact of Federal Reserve's Decisions

The price spike came following a Federal Reserve meeting on March 19, where officials decided to keep interest rates steady. The Fed indicated that it anticipates two interest rate cuts by the end of 2025, with Fed Chair Jerome Powell noting that inflation has significantly eased. Powell emphasized that there was no rush to change policy and that the Fed is prepared to wait for clearer economic signals.

This cautious approach provided a lift to various risk assets, including Bitcoin and U.S. stocks. The S&P 500 saw a positive response, rising about 1% and adding $500 billion to its market capitalization.

Former BitMEX CEO Arthur Hayes remarked that the Fed's stance offers a cue for traders to increase their risk exposure. He highlighted potential future shifts toward quantitative easing (QE) as positive signs for Bitcoin's trajectory.

Traders Anticipate Crypto Announcement

Bitcoin traders are particularly focused on the possibility of a U.S. government announcement regarding cryptocurrency, with speculations of a significant update expected on March 21. This announcement follows President Trump’s earlier executive order to create a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, which caused minimal market reactions as the plan did not necessarily imply direct U.S. purchases of Bitcoin.

As Bitcoin's market position strengthens, traders are becoming more optimistic, especially after closing above crucial resistance lines. Some analysts suggest that Bitcoin may need to increase by just 8% more to reclaim a higher trading range, and notable gains have already been observed since last week's lows.

Investors are advised that market conditions can change rapidly, and engagement in cryptocurrency trading involves risks. It is essential for individuals to conduct thorough research before making investment decisions.
