Musk Critiques $500 Billion Stargate AI Initiative, Altman Responds

Published January 23, 2025

A public debate has erupted among tech leaders regarding the Stargate project, a substantial $500 billion initiative aimed at developing artificial intelligence infrastructure over the next four years. The announcement came during a White House briefing on Tuesday, where it was disclosed that an immediate allocation of $100 billion will be made to kickstart the project.

Initial investors in the Stargate project include notable names like Oracle, OpenAI, SoftBank, and MGX, with a leading role reportedly taken by OpenAI and SoftBank.

However, Elon Musk quickly cast doubt over the funding. In a post on his social media platform X, he stated, "SoftBank has well under $10B secured. I have that on good authority." This public criticism raised eyebrows given Musk's highly influential status in the tech industry.

In response, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman firmly contradicted Musk's claims, asserting, "wrong, as you surely know." Altman went further by inviting Musk to visit the facility under construction in Texas.

The tension between Musk and OpenAI is compounded by his previous legal actions against the organization as it shifts towards a for-profit model. Musk’s claims of financial insecurity for the Stargate project have not gone unnoticed, leading to further discussions about the credibility of the investors involved.

During a CNBC interview, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, a key technology partner in OpenAI's endeavors, opted to refrain from commenting on Musk's remarks. He made it clear, saying, "All I know is ... I'm good for my $80 billion," referencing Microsoft's substantial capital spending plans.

Altman, attempting to quell the drama, remarked on Musk’s previous comments, saying, "I genuinely respect your accomplishments and think you are the most inspiring entrepreneur of our time," a statement that some might consider a diplomatic move aimed at maintaining professional decorum.

Further complicating matters, Musk has an ongoing legal battle with Microsoft regarding OpenAI, and it remains to be seen how this will affect investor sentiment or project momentum.

Later, Musk acknowledged Nadella's financial commitment, confirming, "On the other hand, Satya definitely does have the money." Nadella humorously responded with a "tears of joy" emoji, adding, "And all this money is not about hyping AI, but is about building useful things for the real world!"

While the ongoing exchange between Musk and Altman is less than flattering, it illustrates the complex dynamics at play in the tech industry surrounding investment and collaboration in AI.

Additionally, interestingly, when asked how to spend a billion dollars, Microsoft's Copilot’s top suggestion was not about AI infrastructure but instead philanthropy. This highlights a distinct perspective within the industry about the distribution and application of financial resources.
